Postpartum psychosis is a serious and distinct illness that affects approximately 1 – 2 out of every 1,000 women following childbirth. Although less common than other perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, postpartum psychosis is a psychiatric emergency that carries a significant risk of suicide and infanticide.
